April Club Meeting

Robin welcomed all members to the meeting. We had 4 visitors tonight.

Jim Martin gave us an update on the new studio. It is all painted 18% gray. Jim painted the whole studio by himself. Jeff has found some continuous lighting softboxes for the club which has 5 bulbs in each, and each can be individually controlled. Continuous light is easier to meter and set up. These will be used for workshops and other things. Also some examples of improvising inexpensive lighting. Jim built a background stand out of an old clothes rack to be used in the studio.

Tilton reported on the Forensic Photography class that was held , the first workshop in the new studio. 8 crime scene analysts! He gave a great class which incorporated printed material and explanations of what we were looking at. There were multiple sheets of paper with “blood spatter” on them which were measured, photographed and discussed. There was also a mock crime scene set up for the second half with “finger prints” evidence, etc to examine and photograph. There was a special appearance by John Horsing, Medical Examiner. Forensics is not just examining the scene but photographing it too!

Jim also reported on the upcoming classes. We will have one May 22nd, an intermediate photography supposed to be at Community Education. Club members who want to take that class and sign up through the CLUB, can take this free. We can’t predict how many of the public will sign up for this class but if there are not enough of the public signing up, the class will be held for members only in the studio instead of the high school. Those who can take the class will be notified of the location once it is determined. There are future workshops being developed right now including a portrait lighting class, nature and landscape class.

Photos from the current challenge where shown. The theme was transportation.

Intro to new Challenge - “Food” (If you would eat it, then shoot it)

Mary and Robin then presented their experience photographing food for the KWNG cookbook, shot at Le Cordon Bleu. This cookbook was for the Women’s Expo last month. Some food had to be shot very quickly as some of it would melt quickly. They were told what was to be the main focus of each shot. They also had shots in the kitchen of the chefs working. The chefs did the presentation of each dish. There were also some portraits of the chefs also.

Mary and Robin showed what equipment they used and how they used it. They had a portable flash set at lowest possible setting (1/16th power) and umbrella . A second flash with a paper homemade softbox triggered by cactus (1/32nd power) to fill in shadows. They also used a neutral density filter to enable them to use a wide open aperture at F2.8 to get a shallow depth of field. The white paper over the second flash was to reduce shadows and act as a reflector to keep light more even. The lens used was at 50 mm. They also demonstrated how to do the same shot with a point-and-shoot, flashlights with paper softboxes. They demonstrated both ways, loaded them into the computer and showed them during the meeting.

Next Meeting Monday May 17th at the AC. Studio is open for people to view the studio and the new lighting system.
