May 17, 2010 Regular Monthly Meeting Minutes Red Wing Photo Club
The Red Wing Photography Club met for their regular monthly meeting in the cafeteria at the Anderson Center. Approximately 65 members and guests were in attendance with 6 guests. Kathy Anderson, standing in for Robin Wipperling, welcomed all to the meeting. Robin reported on the upcoming Anderson Center Celebration coming up July 10th. The club is invited to participate in this celebration. The Anderson Center will provide the club with a 20 x 20 tent for us to display and sell our photography with 20% of sales going to the Anderson Center for commission. Robin stated there will be approximately 85 artists displaying their work with some giving demonstrations. There will be music, food, beer and wine. All members are invited to display their best work and help man the tent during the celebration. Tilton Davis, Activities Chairperson, gave a report on an upcoming family picnic August 15th at Colvil Park starting at 4 PM. This will be in place of the August club meeting. Plans are being made for a potluck meal, games for kids, short photography instruction segments, a photo scavenger hunt and much more! The picnic will be held in the screened in shelter. Jim Martin introduced a new segment to our regular club meetings. Volunteer members will be trained in critiquing photography. At each meeting, members can bring a jump driver or disc with a couple of photos they wish to be critiqued. During the meeting, Jeff Marcus will load them into a Power Point. At the end of the meeting, one member who has gone through the critique training class will give a critique of one photo. A second trained member will critique the next, and so on until we run out of time. Member submitting these photos can remain anonymous if they choose. Jeff Marcus put out a call for any photographers interested in a photo competition not associated with the club. Crossings in Zumbrota has a call out for photos which “speak volumes”. A photo or photos which speaks for itself. Entry deadline is July 15th. There is an entry fee of $10 per photographer. Several photos can be submitted for one $10 entry fee. After submission, judges will choose photos and post them on a website. Poets will then choose a photo which speaks to them, and they will write a poem based on that photograph. Their exhibit entitled “Poetography” will be in October. An e-mail will be sent to all members with further information regarding this competition. Jeff then introduced our special speaker for the evening. Rikk Flohr, a professional photographer, teacher, Photoshop expert, and club member spent 19 days in Badlands National Park in December of 2008. He described his experience entitled “Season of Silence” and how with no visitors in the park, only park staff other than himself, the silence was deafening. He had multiple beautiful images of sunrises, sunsets, rock formations and wildlife including prairie dogs, coyotes, bobcats, bighorn sheep, buffalo, antelope, whitetail and mule deer. Awe inspiring images kept the audience spellbound. We appreciate Rikk taking the time to honor us with this presentation. He also spoke regarding next year’s Costa Rica opportunities. There is an opportunity for club members to customize a tour just for them. Further information on this will be available. To top off the meeting, we then reviewed the photos submitted for the monthly challenge “Food”. Lots of imagination went into the images submitted and some very tasty looking food was photographed!. Our next monthly challenge will be “Primary Colors” The colors of red, blue, green, yellow in any form or combination. We look forward to seeing what our members come up with for this challenge. Kathy then closed the meeting thanking all for attending and a big thank-you to Rikk for his presentation.
